Farmers Market Coop of East Liberty Update

Update for Saturday July 28th

Hi everyone. I missed the market last Saturday due to a college visit. I will be back this Saturday and look forward to seeing some great food items. We are in the heart of the growing season, so there are lots of locally grown fruits and vegetables available, and of course the J. L. Kennedy meat.

Special Event

The folks at East Liberty Developemt (ELDAI) are holding an updcoming event that I want to tell everyone about. Its called the East Liberty Circulation and Mobility Vision Public Creative Brainstorming Session!

Envision an East Liberty where all types of people move around (and get to) the community safely, with ease, by any mode of choice!

The Update

Greenawalt Farm

I spoke with Brian Greenawalt and he told me of a tragedy this week. One of the Amish farmer that he works with was killed by a lightning strike. It was a freak accident. Her name was Mary Yoder and she was also pregnant. So very sad.

So he is not sure exacly what items he will be getting this week. He said he would expect items similar to last week plus he expected to have watermellons and other mellons. Other items should include sweet corn, zucchini, yellow squash, pickle cucumbers, radishes, green onions, peaches, lettuce, swiss chard, blueberries. Check out their fresh cut herbs such as chives and mint. In addition they will have locally grown eggs and their normal selection of Amish made products.

***jake and tay still have a small amount of show cattle beef left to offer for private sale...difference??? These cattle eat complex vegetation mix and are hand- walked/exercised...highest- end beef you can buy on the market today !!! Added plus...these cattle have won at all their MEAT shows which speaks for itself!!! Please contact us by August 5 th to set up your share...

Zang's Greenhouse...Locally grown items this week include bell peppers, hot peppers, cauliflower, leeks, fresh garlic, cucumbers, pickles, sweet onions, zucchini, beets, micro greens, green onions, green beans, wax beans, potatoes, lettuce, shallots, and eggplants (unique varieties). Sweet corn from McElhaney farm. In the fruit department- local blueberries and blackberries- watermellons, musk mellons, and Chambersburg peaches.

California Olive Oil Connection

This is the time of year that I really love olive oil because it goes so well with all these locally grown veggies. I like to use ths spicier oils raw poured on slads and blanched vegetables. I also like to roast all sorts of veggies (including onions and garlic) drizzled with lots of olive oil. We have six varieties of California grown, certified extra virgnin olive oil available. This is the real thing, not the fake, adulterated stuff.

The Greek Gourmet- will have homemade spinach and meat pies to the market each week- in addition to 20+ flavors of hummus. Stop by and talk to Jack at the booth.

PA Made Cheese- We have a fresh shipment of goat cheese from Riverview Dairy. We will have chev, feta and Purple Goat varieties. Sorry, no curds this week as the Gaugler's are taking a vacation.

The Farmers' Market Cooperative of East Liberty is located at 344 North Sheridan Ave., adjacent to the Home Depot parking lot. The market operates year round- and is open from 5 AM until 12 noon every Saturday of the year.
